Dave Batista got handed the role of a lifetime as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy. Even 6+ years ago when he was cast, actors and actresses were chomping at the bit to get brought into the money making machine that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And to his credit, he’s done a real good job with the character. His humor hits almost every time and he’s very much a net positive in every scene he’s in. But for some odd reason, the actor seems to want nothing to do with the character anymore. Talking out both sides of his mouth every chance he gets recently.
Why, you may ask? To put it very bluntly: he’s not getting the attention he thinks he deserves and he doesn’t like to put on the makeup anymore.
Our saga starts in a recent interview with Digital Spy where he said:
“There were talks for a while about a Drax and Mantis film. It was really because it was James Gunn’s idea. He really wanted to do a Drax and Mantis film. He laid it out to me. I thought it was such a brilliant idea, but I haven’t heart and follow-up from the studio.
“I don’t think they’re very interested, or it doesn’t fit into the way they have things mapped out…”
On the surface, these comments seem relatively harmless. There’s clearly some underlying disdain towards Marvel that can be traced back to when they fired director James Gunn over some very old distasteful tweets (which led Batista to very publicly say he is done playing the role until Gunn comes back), but the director has since been brought back and everyone sand kumbaya. Or so we thought.
Even though a Drax & Mantis film isn’t being done (Thank God. Listen, if Rocket and Groot aren’t getting their own film, you two sure as hell aren’t), there’s always a chance to do a series, right!? Nope. Not for Batista. He has another recent interview with JoBlo where he not only commented on his own lack of a series, but about no Guardians characters getting a series:
“Yeah, I was shocked, I got on my Twitter for a second and started to bash them for not making like, not one Guardians character got a TV show. Like, how does that happen? There’s so many interesting characters in that world. I just don’t get it.”
The fact that your first instinct was to run to Twitter to bitch and moan reveals the type of
man adolescent we are dealing with here. Moving on..
Yes Dave, there are interesting characters in that world. That’s why they’re making another Guardians of the Galaxy movie! What don’t you get? But as the convo continued, Batista straight up says he wouldn’t even do a Drax show if he was asked!
“Honestly, if they offered me a series, I wouldn’t do it. Not a chance in hell would I do a TV series playing Drax. That is a make-up nightmare. I would be miserable. Yeah, that make-up isn’t fun. It’s awful, so I’m not gonna sign up to do a series where I’m in that make-up every day.”
Oh okay, so you’re bitching just to bitch then, is that it? Even if you got your way and was offered a TV show instead of a film, you’d still be like “Nah, I just wanted you guys to give me more attention.” Got it.
Hey Dave, no one wants to hear how annoying it is to put on your make-up. No one. So to continuously hear your narcissistic ass complain about it makes you extremely unlikeable. This just screams Jennifer Lawrence to me and trust me, you don’t want to be seen as a Jennifer Lawrence type in the eyes of Marvel fans..
But the complain train doesn’t stop there! Batista then sat down with Collider where he spoke about how Marvel “dropped the ball” with Drax..
“Now that I’m four films in…I really wished they would have invested more in Drax, personally. Because I think Drax has more of a story to tell. I think Drax has a really interesting backstory which they dropped the ball on. That’s no dig on Marvel. They had their slate, I know what they’re focused on, that’s what they have slated out. But man, I think they really missed the ball on Drax. He has such a great backstory. Selfishly, as a performer, that would have given me the opportunity to show different sides of Drax, emotionally. And physically as well. Because, if you notice, Drax, although he looks like a badass, you look at him and he looks terrifying, but Drax gets his ass kicked more than any other Marvel character…The whole “Destroyer” thing they just threw that out the window…people just fell so in love with the comedic side of Drax they tapped into that, then they tapped into it more, then they really dug a hole into it. But we missed a huge boat on that character and I don’t think it’ll ever come back around. But I’m really just looking forward to finishing out this whole journey.”
What Batista doesn’t seem to understand is that comicbook characters more often than not have to be adjusted when brought into the MCU. Nebula used the Infinity Gauntlet in the comics. So does Captain America. Iron Man is in the Illuminati. Hulk goes to a planet of Hulk’s and runs train on them all before coming back to Earth to kill everyone. Black Widow has the super soldier serum. Hell, Thanos has his own helicopter! Things get adjusted based on the road Marvel is going down. Batista himself admits that but then proceeds to not-so-subtly jab at Marvel every chance he gets.
And he’s right, fans did fall in love with Drax. That’s not Marvel “dropping the ball” on you. That’s them crafting a great iteration of your character where he can be in 4 movies, not be a MAIN character and still be a fan favorite. Sorry you didn’t get to flex your acting muscles, but tough luck. I understand you wish more of your backstory was fleshed out, but that can be said for every single character in the MCU. Literally, every single one.
When we meet Spider-Man, the entire story of how he got his abilities got cut. Thanos’ entire relationship with Death got cut out of his arc. Ulysses Klaue has an ENTIRE STORYLINE about battling with the Wakandans that gets nothing more than a few sentences. Every main or side character in the MCU has a plethora of stories in their past that Marvel could’ve used. But again, they have a plan and sometimes things get cut. There’s no need to sit there like a child and complain every chance you get.
And why do you keep saying you’re looking forward to being done with the role? That’s a weird vibe to give off to the audience. Imagine if Hugh Jackman was like “Listen guys, I can not WAIT to be done with Wolverine.” Oh, and Drax does not get beat up more than anyone in the MCU. Not even close. Iron Man gets throttled in almost every movie he’s in…repeatedly. But please, let your pettiness show a little more ya dink.
This leads us to a recent interview he did with USA Today..
“I’m in a weird place with Drax because I’ve played Drax so many times, I’m on cruise control. I love the character, but getting in the makeup, it’s just a nightmare. I couldn’t explain how awful it is. I hate to sound like one of those high-maintenance actors, but it’s just traumatizing.”
TRAUMATIZING! This guys said putting on loads of make-up is TRAUMATIZING! What a statement.
Batista is the type of guy who says “I don’t want to sound like an asshole, BUT…” and then goes on to sound like an asshole. Or the type who says “No offense, BUT…” and proceeds to say something offensive. Hey buddy, if you don’t want to sound like one of those “high-maintenance actors”, how about you uh, don’t act like one of those high-maintenance actors!? Crazy idea, I know.
But while complaining is nothing out of the ordinary for Batista, it’s the “cruise control” comment that really irks me. How many times did RDJ or Chris Evans play their respective characters? I don’t recall them ever making any comments like this. And yeah, I get that you have to go through the TRAUMATIZING process of putting crazy makeup on, but grow the hell up. You sound like an arrogant prick.
It may seem like I’m being rough on Batista here, but this isn’t the first time I’ve seen him act like this. I’ve followed his career ever since his WWE days and guess what, he did the same shit there! He wanted better storylines/more attention in WWE, so he left. He was brought back again and didn’t like that he didn’t have enough creative freedom and pouted his way back to Hollywood. Nevermind that he got a Wrestlemania main event over guys that worked their asses off 365 days a year only to get passed over by a part time asshat. This is nothing new for Dave Batista, so I’m not sure why I expected this relationship to end any other way.
And the last little bit that’s annoyed me here is that Batista has all but confirmed that Drax is dying in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and won’t be coming back. Even though most Marvel fans could’ve put the pieces together that this MAY happen, especially after Gunn said there’d be a big death in the movie, it’s still not cool to basically all out spoil it in such a petulant, dick-ish way. Imagine if Scarlett Johansson was like “Oh yeah guys I am DONE after Endgame. Can’t wait to be done. You won’t be seeing any more Black Widow after this!”
But oh well, Batista wants out and it looks like he’s getting his wish. It’s a shame that his character comes off as so likeable but the man behind the (traumatizing) make-up comes off as anything but. He’s made it clear that he is done with the character, so I hope he gets his wish. Good riddance. Hopefully no other role forces you to put on a bunch of make-up in order to become part of a massive money making movie again. Oh the horror!
