I say ‘fall’ because that’s exactly what happened. The Celtics kept it close through 3 1/2 quarters and then the bottom just fell out.
Everyone just stopped hitting shots it seemed. Or for every bucket the Celtics did get, the Sixers came right back with one of their own. There was just no digging out of the hole, no matter how hard they tried.
And for the love of GOD can someone please hit both of their free throws!? It seemed like time after time Tatum or Kanter or anyone went to the line, they’d clank the first one or rim out the second. Points were left on the floor there and that certainly didn’t help the 4th quarter comeback.
And if anyone was wondering how Kemba would look on his brand new team, the answer is bad. And it didn’t help that the guy he replaced scored 50 points for his new team. This graphic was fun too when it popped up.
But this isn’t something I’d expect to carry on throughout the entire season. Kemba just didn’t look good tonight. 12 points. 2 rebounds. 2 assists. Gotta get those numbers up my friend.
It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Green tonight though! You know who’s all the way back? Gordon Hayward. He looked great tonight with 25/5/2. He was aggressive and looked confident the entire game. Gotta love that if you’re a Celtics fan.
Tatum also looked pretty good tonight. He looked like a player who’s poised to breakout and lead this team. He notched a double double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to go along with 2 assists. If the Celtics are going to go anywhere this year, Tatum needs to be a vital cog in that machine.
Now, when it comes to Jaylen Brown, I’m not sure what I disliked more. His game or the fact that he cut his hair. I know he did that well before tonight but I just can’t wrap my head around seeing him without his flattop. It’s unnerving and clearly hindered his play. Because I refuse to admit that Boston gave $115 million to a player who doesn’t deserve it so, I’ll just blame the haircut.
Smart obviously did Smart things all game and the rookies looked decent, but at the end of the night this is a loss to your rival. And it stings. You won’t see any players from tonight pulling a Lebron and acting like this isn’t a rivalry. Because it’s damn sure is.
And so the Sixers take the first battle in this season long war for supremacy, but it’s a long year. I’m not going to overreact to one game. But I will say this: HIT YOUR DAMN FREE THROWS NEXT TIME!
