I wanted to wait a little before blogging about this. It’s obviously a sensitive subject when talking about someone getting shot and not knowing much about why it happened.
Add to it a larger than life athlete like David Ortiz, and it just intensifies the entire situation.
In case you’ve been under a rock the past 24 hours, you’ve heard by now that Ortiz was shot while in the Dominican Republic, his home country. Papi was shot point blank in the lower back, not the leg like what was reported early on.
He’s been in serious condition ever since news of all this broke last night and was immediately rushed into surgery. So it was good news tonight to hear that he is stable enough to be moved to Boston.
The outcry for this man has been nothing short of amazing. But it really hasn’t been surprising. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone on the planet with one negative thing to say about him. I don’t care if you’re a Yankees fan or just a Boston hater, there’s nothing to genuinely dislike about the guy. He’s the only athlete from Boston who can say that as well.
Even the GOAT Tom Brady has his detractors. Granted, they really have no ground to stand on, but still, detractors nonetheless.
You had people across every entertainment medium tweeting their condolences and prayers and kind thoughts to Big Papi.
There are literally hundreds more of these that you can go look at. The point is that Big Papi’s reach went far beyond baseball. Sure, he’s a legend in Boston mainly because of his play on the field, but he means so much more than that now. Just like he is over in the DR, he’s essentially royalty once he gets into New England.
Now, it’s being reported that the reason Ortiz got shot was that a Dominican drug lord put a hit out on him for supposedly sleeping with his wife. But again, this is all just rumors and hear say.
There’s now even a video that’s allegedly Papi’s mistress going at it with his wifes sister.
I have no idea if that’s what this video is, but it’s being posted everywhere claiming that it is. So who knows.
But even if that’s true, this is still crazy, surreal shit. A drug lord put a hit out on David Ortiz? That’s a sentence I never thought I would ever utter in my entire life.
All I can say is that I hope that Big Papi has a full recovery without any complications. This giant was such a big part of my sports life growing up that I almost feel like he’s a family member. In a region where every fans views sports as a religion, Ortiz was like our God for many years.
Get well soon Papi. You have millions of people in your corner.
