Marvel Monday is going to be a thing now. Every Monday I’m going to post something about Marvel. Whether it has to do with the MCU or some behind the scenes stuff going on or something like this. If you don’t like superhero related stuff I recommend you get outta here cause this is nerd time.
Alexandra Shipp is the actress who was tapped to play Storm in the most recent incarnation of the X-Men. She’s stated numerous times that she loves playing the role but it never really translates to the big screen. These movies Fox puts out are an absolute mess anyway, so what she has done with the role has been admirable I guess? But it’s been nothing memorable whatsoever. Maybe it’s just the vibe around these movies but Shipp, along with almost every other actor in these films, seem to be uninspired half the time. Which makes her comments regarding the Disney/Fox merger kinda puzzling and annoying.
Way back in 2017 Shipp tweeted out about the two companies joining forces.
Uhhhhhhh, does she not know? Marvel Studios is doing a full reboot of the entire franchise she’s apart of. The only actor who survived is Ryan Reynolds which makes all the sense in the world. But like, did she really believe this? The second there were whispers of Disney buying out Fox, Kevin Feige already came out and said that they would be replacing everyone and that Dark Phoenix would be the last movie for them. Did she think that her performances have been so good that she would make the cut? Did she think that Feige was just playing around with everyone? Come on now.
Why on Earth would Marvel Studios bring HER over, out of all the actors from the Fox Universe? Reynolds was an obvious choice. He absolutely nails the role of Deadpool. The only other two I could even imagine would be Mcavoys’ Professor X and Fassbenders’ Margneto. Everyone else needs to be shipped the fuck outta here. Which pains me to say because I love Sophie Turner but she just hasn’t gotten the chance to flesh out the character of Jean Grey. But the difference between her and Shipp is that when Turner is on the screen you pay attention. You can tell there’s some potential there. When Storm is on the screen I often times forget who the hell she even is.
This all brings me to Alexandra Shipp, again, bringing up the merger like she is gonna be around to enjoy it. Recently Shipp was interviewed about all of it and she had some cringe-inducing things to say about not only Marvel owning Fox but also how she feels her character should be portrayed. There’s a few quotes I wanna touch on. Here’s one:
“No, I don’t think Storm needs T’Challa, and I think she needs her own movie! It doesn’t have to be me, it just needs to be made,” Shipp said to LRM Online while appearing at WonderCon. “A woman does not need a man in order to give her validity and she has also been around longer than him.”
I don’t want this all to be negative so I’ll applaud her for the fact that she said it “doesn’t have to be me” cause guess what? It will most certainly not be you. The first part of the quote infuriates me. No one is saying Storm ‘needs’ T’Challa. But her eventual marriage to Black Panther is a HUGE thing in the comics, which these movies are based off of. Their marriage came at a time where a Civil War was going on between all the superheros. These two major characters coming together ended up in a momentary cease fire between everyone which eventually led to everything going back to normal. I know their story won’t be exactly like that in the MCU, but it’s one of those moments that’s too big to NOT have in the movies.
The second part of the quote is just unnecessary. No one is saying a woman needs a man. Stop trying to make this into some sort of sexist thing. Marvel Studios likes to stay as close to the comics as they can with slight twists here and there (i.e. Skrulls), so of course this is eventually gonna happen. People who try to make a decision out to have this ulterior motive just because it doesn’t jive with what they think is right annoy the shit out of me. So let’s not let this idea gain any steam.
Shipp went on to comment on her character being brought into the MCU:
“I would and I wouldn’t (like it), because Storm barely has anything to say as it is,” she explained. “I don’t know about you all (other actors) but like we never talk. So it would be really nice if we weren’t piled into yet another jam packed cast, in which you only see me in the back of the shot like f***ing sasquatch.”
Facepalm city with this shit. Has she watched any Marvel ensemble movie in the past decade? They do a pretty damn good job of juggling a bunch of characters and giving them all their time to shine while making it all flow within the story. Can I interest you in Infinity War perhaps? How about Civil War? So the notion that her character would get pushed to the back “like fucking sasquatch” is just ridiculous. Again, she really shouldn’t care one way or another about this though because, again, YOU WON’T EVEN BE AROUND LONG ENOUGH TO EXPERIENCE IT!
P.S. The headline to this blog is an A+ title. Her name is Alexandra Shipp. The ship has sailed on her time as the character. Good job Mike.
